March Craft Night Projects (Lunch & Learn Edition)

Did you catch Craft Night With Kimberbell on March 12, 2026? Things were a little different this month, as we combined Craft Night with our final Home Sewn Lunch & Learn.

If you're new, Craft Night is about taking original Kimberbell projects and reimagining them in new ways.

Cassie's Project:  Neighborhood/Car Rug

Original

Cassie stitched the camper and house from Home Sewn, Vol. 1 and created a neighborhood and car rug! She also used the animals from Kimberbell's Forest Friend Soft Book.
She added shops and homes from our Sweetheart Street Bench Pillow and plans to add to the neighborhood with houses from Home Sewn Vols. 2, 3, and 4!
Here's a look at the original products:

Home Sewn, Vol. 1

Home Sewn, Vol. 1 is the first of four tiled scene collections from Kimberbell. Stitch six panels on your embroidery machine, then sew them together to create scenes for April, May, and June!

Forest Friends

Our Forest Friends Soft Book Project Kit includes the files, instructions, and materials you need to make one interactive quiet book. Stitch the book, then make animal friends for the pocketed pages!

Sweetheart Street

Kimberbell’s 16 x 38” Sweetheart Street Bench Pillow celebrates the season with sweet memories and delicious designs. Make this darling Valentine’s Day-cor in 5x7 or larger hoops!

Reimagined: Neighborhood/Road Map

Cassie created a dimensional community sized for Hot Wheels cars. After stitching the houses, campers, and shops from the products listed above, Cassie put them on wooden stands!
To see Cassie describe her project, click HERE and go to the 5:36 mark! Here's a picture of Cassie's project (minus the dimensional stands).

Isn't that SEW much fun?! Very imaginative, to say the least, and hours of fun for kids. I would've loved this as a child!

Materials Needed

Here's what Cassie says about her project: "I usually go "off-roading" for Craft Night; this is much more bushwhacking!

For anyone who's wanting to make a similar project, I recommend just having fun with it and seeing what you come up with."

Cassie's Pro Tips: Part A (Making the Houses)

Stitch out all tiles (the home you want) on Cut-Away Stabilizer. Skip any steps with elements that aren't part of the building (e.g., trees, birdhouses, clouds, etc.).

Cassie started with Step 4 (the fabric tackdown line) so she still had the guide for cutting out the tiles and putting them together.

Sew tiles together as per the instructions. (Kim has some great tips in the 3rd Lunch & Learn video!) When Cassie is working with thick materials, she uses binder clips to keep her blocks together (stronger than quilt clips).

Cut around the finished house. Cassie finds it easy to leave about a 1/4" around details like flowers.

Next, put your home on a piece of Shape Form Interfacing and sew around the border.

Cassie also put a piece of Flexi Foam inside to give her houses extra "poof." (Make sure to leave a 1" gap at the bottom of the house.)

Cut out the house and the Shape Form and find something you can use as a stand. Cassie found dowels with wooden bases at a thrift store, but you can use anything you think will work!

Cassie's Pro Tips: Part B (Making the Car Rug)

Cassie raided her fabric stash for the colors she wanted to use and made "improv" blocks by combining the scraps together.

When her improv blocks were about 10 x 10", Cassie used Kim's Stack & Whack, Stitch & Switch method to add variety to her blocks. (Watch a demo of that method HERE!)

After Cassie was satisfied with her new blocks, she put them together to make mini quilts for her backgrounds. She then attached the mini quilts to 14 x 14" pieces of Shape Form for stability.

Cassie used the "old school" technique for the applique roads, driveways, lakes, and other details. She didn't follow any rhyme or reason; she just went with what she thought would be fun textures!
