Clear Blue Tiles Seminar: Custom Quilting PLUS Penguin Project!

Clear Blue Tiles

Clear Blue Tiles are an innovative system for quilting on your home embroidery machine, just as if you used a longarm. (And they're a total game-changer!)

This is done by creating a quilt sandwich, using tiles to mark your top fabric, and then using the corresponding embroidery file to stitch a quilting design!

The stitching goes all the way through the layers and can be seen on both the front and the back. Although you did it piece by piece, the effect is professional, allover quilting!

Clear Blue Tiles are explained in great detail in our first seminar, which I highly recommend. So before we go further, let's pause to revisit Seminar #1. 😀

Seminar #1: Introduction to Clear Blue Tiles

This seminar is a really good, thorough introduction to Clear Blue Tiles, including what they are and how very easily they work.

So please sit back, grab a snack, and enjoy Seminar #1 below!

Now, building upon Seminar #1, Kim will next demonstrate how to use Clear Blue Tiles to do custom quilting on different sections of your project.

Note: This is different from Block-by-Block quilting, which will be the subject of an upcoming seminar. (The Block-by-Block method is used behind applique designs.)

Seminar #2: Custom Quilting With Clear Blue Tiles

The second seminar is all about custom quilting, which means that each section of your project can be quilted with a different design. How fun is that?! (Pretty darn fun!) 😀

Now, no one can explain things as well as Kim can, so here's the video of Seminar #2!

Can you picture yourself having a blast with custom quilting? Kimberbell comes out with new quilting designs all the time. It's easy and fun to build your personal quilting library!

Below are a few of Kim's tips from the seminar!

Kim's Tips for Custom Quilting With Clear Blue Tiles

  • Lay each Clear Blue Tile on a different section of the quilt top, mark it, and pull up the corresponding files on your machine.
  • Use Light Blue or Dark Blue designs. Click HERE to learn more!
  • Because they come in even sizes, custom quilting works best with even-sized blocks (e.g., 8 1/2 x 8 1/2).
  • Use a light touch when using your water-soluble pen OR use Kimberbell Paper Tape to mark as described in the video at the 21:24 mark.
  • Place CBT files in the different squares/rectangles to visualize how each section becomes its own quilting.
  • Kim likes to use her tiles to mark the entire quilt front at once. She also likes working from the center out. (Both of these are personal preference.)
  • Your backing fabric should be larger than your front fabric.
  • If needed, you can add strips of leftover stabilizer, muslin, or extra fabric to extend your back fabric (as explained in the video at the 31:04 mark).
  • Use double-sided tape to help with hooping as described in the video at the 34:50 mark.

Now, here are the details of the Penguin Pillow/Table Topper that Kim promised to share with you!
